Subject syllabus

Lectures:

1. Schedule and conditions of course completion. DC circuits: basic concepts, laws, active and passive devices, circuit solving methods.
2. Single phase AC circuits: origin, description, characteristic values, AC circuits with passive elements and their solution, powers in AC circuits. Power factor correction.
3. Electric measurement: basic concepts, faults at measuring, voltage, current, power and resistance measuring.
4. Three phase power circuits: origin, phasor diagrams, symmetrical load connection, powers.
5. Fundamentals of semiconductor technology: physical nature, semiconductor elements, rectifiers.
6. Switching and protection devices: fuses, circuit breakers, RCD, switching devices, lightning arresters.
7. Basics of logic control, safety logic circuits: definitions, categories, description.
8. Transformers: single-phase, three-phase - principle of operation, design. Autotransformers. Safety transformers.
9. External influences and hazardous environments, cover, effects of electric current on the human body, protection against electric shock.
10. Safe operation of electrical equipment: definition, basic concepts, qualification of persons, classification, basic requirements for safe operation on electrical equipment, examples of applications. Extinguishing electrical equipment.
11. Basic criteria for the conductors dimensioning and protection of electrical distribution systems: permissible operating temperature, voltage drop, economical cross-section, short-circuit currents, principles for protection of lines and appliances. Fire protection of installations.
12. Rotating electrical machines: types of operating characteristics, areas of application. Electrical equipment and motors in explosive atmospheres.
13. Backup (standby) power supplies: division, principles, usage, source requirements for fire safety equipment. Lightning protection, basic design of buildings surge protection. Heat sources from electrical energy.

Numerical exercises:

DC circuit solutions.
Solution of alternating 1-phase circuits. Term project assignment.
Solution of three-phase circuits. Test
Rectifiers.
Transformers.
Calculations of touch voltages during fault conditions in electrical systems.
Test, consultation, award of credit.

Laboratory exercises:

Introduction - Safety training. Measurements on a DC circuit.
Measurement on single-phase AC circuit, reactive power compensation.
Measurements on single-phase rectifiers.
Logical control-belt transport.
