Subject syllabus

1. Fundamentals of electrical energy and power – voltage, current, power, active x reactive x apparent power.
2. Introduction to electrical power engineering – basic concepts (generation, transmission, distribution, consumption).
3. Electricity generation from fossil fuels – coal and gas power plants, principles, advantages, and disadvantages.
4. Nuclear power – principle of fission, operation of a nuclear power plant, safety, advantages and risks.
5. Renewable energy sources: hydro, wind, solar, biomass – principle of production, examples.
6. Combined production and decentralized sources – cogeneration, trigeneration, local energy sources.
7. Transmission system – high-voltage lines, transformers, importance of the transmission system.
8. Distribution system – structure of the distribution network.
9. Losses in the electricity system – types of losses and how to reduce them.
10. Quality of electrical energy – voltage parameters, harmonic distortion, flicker, power outages.
11. Reactive power compensation – importance of reactive power, compensation methods.
12. Energy storage – battery storage, pumped storage power plants, hydrogen.
13. Community energy and energy communities – principle, legislation, smart grids.
