Subject syllabus

Metallic lines
1. Basic concepts of transmission technology. Block diagram of the transmission chain.
2. Equivalent circuit for a metallic two-wire parallel transmission line.
3. Homogeneous lines at high frequencies.
4. Inhomogeneities of metallic lines.

Optical lines
5. Light. Principles of data transmission by optical fibers.
6. Dispersion in optical fibers and its compensation. Losses and attenuation in optical fibers.
7. Sources and detectors for optical communication systems. Wavelength division multiplex systems.
8. Measurements on optical fiber paths.
9. Fiberless optics - properties of the atmosphere as an optical transmission medium; atmospheric attenuation; wander, scintillation.

Radio communication
10. History, radio spectrum division and management.
11. Basic principles of wave propagation, wave types and properties.
12. Basic models of propagation, losses, Fressnell zone.
13. RF feeders and connectors. Antennas - basic parameters, types and their properties.

The numbering only separates the different thematic blocks and does not have to correspond with the topics discussed in the individual weeks of the semester.
