Summary

Upon successful completion of the course, the student:
– explains the principles of information transmission through optical fibres and the function of the basic components of an optical communication system,
– analyses the characteristics of multimode and single-mode optical fibres,
– assesses the effects of attenuation, dispersion, and other optical fibre parameters on system transmission performance,
– describes the operating principles of lasers, LEDs, and photodetectors used in optical communications,
– designs the basic structure of an optical communication link and assesses its transmission parameters.
