Summary

This course focuses on the fundamentals of metrology and its application in geodesy, particularly on issues related to units of measurement, metrological terminology, legal regulations, technical standards, and the system of metrological traceability. Students will become familiar with the principles of the realization and maintenance of units, the activities of national and international metrological institutions, and the requirements for the verification and calibration of measuring instruments. Special attention is given to the calibration of geodetic instruments, the verification of their proper functioning, and the evaluation of measurement results using relevant Czech, European, and international standards. The course also covers the evaluation of surveying results in terms of their metrological quality.

Professional Knowledge: The student understands the basic principles of metrology, metrological terminology, and the development and structure of systems of measurement units, particularly the SI system. They are familiar with the principles of the realization, preservation, and transfer of units, the system of metrological traceability, and the roles of national and international metrological authorities. They are familiar with the legal regulations, technical standards, and requirements related to measurement, verification, and calibration of measuring instruments in the Czech Republic and the European Union, and understand their significance for geodetic practice.
Professional Skills: The student is able to apply the principles of metrology when evaluating measuring instruments and measurement results in geodesy. The student can design and perform basic procedures for the inspection and calibration of geodetic instruments, evaluate their proper functioning, and assess calibration results with regard to the required accuracy and relevant normative requirements. They are able to evaluate the metrological traceability of measuring instruments, work with verification and calibration results, and take their impact into account when assessing the quality and accuracy of surveying results.
General Competency: Students independently and responsibly decide on the appropriateness of using measuring instruments and measurement procedures, taking into account the required accuracy, the purpose of the measurement, and applicable legal and technical requirements. They provide a professional justification for the selection of measuring instruments, calibration, and inspection procedures; critically evaluate the limitations and uncertainties associated with measurement; and assume responsibility for the quality and reliability of the results of surveying activities. They take into account the legal and professional requirements of metrological practice and clearly communicate the results of their professional assessment.
