Cartographic Excursion

The course is designed to provide students with practical exposure to major cartographic institutions, archives, museums, and workplaces in the Czech Republic, as well as to the real-world environment of cartographic practice. As part of the field trip, students will visit the Moravian Cartographic Center in Velké Opatovice and, depending on current availability, other selected cartographic institutions, archives, map collections, or cartographic publishing houses. Emphasis is placed on learning about historical and contemporary cartographic works, methods of their preservation, and gaining practical insight into the process of creating and publishing maps and atlases.

Specialized Knowledge: Students will gain knowledge of the activities of cartographic museums, archives, map collections, and specialized institutions, and will become familiar with historical and contemporary cartographic works, methods of documenting and preserving them, and the basic principles of producing and publishing maps and atlases.
Professional Skills: Students will be able to navigate cartographic collections and specialized institutions, identify the basic characteristics and significance of selected cartographic works, and apply theoretical knowledge of cartography to the practical procedures used in the creation, processing, archiving, and publication of maps and atlases.
General Competencies: Students are able to independently navigate the environment of cartographic institutions and professional practice, assess the importance of cartographic archives, museums, and publishing houses for the preservation and development of cartographic heritage, and apply the knowledge gained in further studies and professional activities in the fields of cartography and geoinformatics.
