Summary

The course introduces industrial raw materials markets. The emphasis is on understanding the process from mining, through trade to the application of industrial raw materials. During lectures, students are introduced to the entire process, an overview of the main industrial raw materials and commodities and the possibilities of their analysis, market research and trading. During the exercises, students gain practical experience by working on a semester project.

After completing the course, the student will achieve the following learning outcomes:
Professional knowledge
Defines the specifics of industrial markets, the structure of value chains and market structures in the raw materials sector in comparison with consumer markets. Describes the factors determining the supply and demand for raw materials, the principles of commodity cycles and price elasticity in commodity markets. Identifies relevant primary and secondary information sources, industry databases and international statistical agencies. Clarifies the mechanisms of functioning and pricing in the markets of energy raw materials and the emissions trading system. Classifies the markets of secondary raw materials and renewable commodities and explains the principles of the circular economy and urban mining.

Professional skills
The student applies the methods of fundamental analysis and PESTLE analysis when assessing external influences, supply-demand shocks and geopolitical risks on the market of a specific raw material. Evaluates the supply and geopolitical risks of selected critical raw materials in the context of energy and technological transition. Interprets correlations between macroeconomic factors and price developments of selected raw materials. Compares and assesses the economic efficiency of using primary and secondary raw materials with regard to market prices, processing costs and legislation. Proposes a market research and basic forecasting procedure for a selected commodity project.

General competencies
The student uses appropriate methodological procedures when analyzing the market environment. Critically assesses the validity and reliability of available data sources on commodity markets and expertly defends proposed solutions and market predictions. Is able to cooperate in a team when solving multidisciplinary case studies and projects focused on raw material security and sustainability. Understandably communicates the outputs of commodity analyses and market studies. He is developing his expertise in new market instruments, decarbonization, and the dynamics of global supply chains.
