Subject syllabus

1. Physical, chemical and biological properties of natural waters. Pollutants in water, quality requirements for drinking and service water, water sources.
2. Mechanical, chemical and biological processes of water treatment. Technological possibilities of individual water treatment processes, application examples.
3. Sedimentation, particle drop in liquid, settling and thickening of suspensions. Rectangular and circular settling tanks, calculation of technological parameters of settling tanks, law of surface loading.
4. Coagulation in water technology, colloidal destabilization, Stern bilayer model, zeta potential. Types of coagulants, perikinetic and orthokinetic coagulation. Water clarification, types of clarifiers.
5. Filtration of water, mechanism of particle trapping by a layer of granular material. Pressure conditions in the filter, types of filter cartridges, calculation of filtration and washing cycles.
6. Types of filters basic technological parameters, calculation of filtration rate, filter regeneration, possibilities of use in water technology.
7. Technological procedures of groundwater treatment, carbon dioxide and its forms in water, calcium-carbonate equilibrium. Physical and chemical processes of water deacidification, technological equipment.
8. Removal of iron and manganese from groundwater, forms of occurrence in water, process theory. Technological processes of alkalization and oxidation, biological processes. Catalytic manganese removal processes.
9. Ion exchange, process theory, cation exchange and anion exchange properties. Technological procedures of ion exchange and regeneration of ion exchangers. Water softening by chemical processes.
10. Water treatment by membrane processes, microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, electrodialysis. Technological equipment and procedures. Examples of use.
11. Hygienic security of drinking water. Use of ultraviolet radiation, disinfection with chlorine and its compounds, ozone disinfection. Technological equipment for chemical dosing.
12. Adsorption from aqueous solutions, adsorbents and adsorbates. Physical adsorption and chemisorption, adsorption isotherms. Use in water technology.
13. Special technological processes of water treatment. Dechlorination, radon removal, biological nitrate removal, water fluoridation. Corrosive and incremental properties of water, magnetic water treatment.
