Anotace

The course focuses on the principles, methodological approaches and practical application of carbon footprint assessment for organisations and products in the context of climate change, environmental management and organisational management. Attention is paid to greenhouse gas (GHG) emission and removal inventories, the definition of organisational and reporting boundaries, direct and indirect emissions, Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3, the use of data and emission factors, and the assessment of their quality. The course also addresses the methodological approaches of the GHG Protocol, relevant ISO standards in their current versions, life cycle assessment, product carbon footprinting, GHG emissions management and reduction, and the use of results in organisational management, sustainability reporting and verification of GHG-related information.
Professional Knowledge: The student explains the principles of carbon footprint assessment for organisations and products and characterises the main methodological approaches to the quantification, reporting and verification of greenhouse gas emissions and removals. The student explains the definition of organisational and reporting boundaries, distinguishes between direct and indirect emissions, and characterises Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3, including their importance for an organisation’s GHG inventory. The student explains the principles of working with emission factors, data quality requirements and the main sources of uncertainty in GHG quantification. The student characterises the GHG Protocol, relevant ISO standards in their current versions and the principles of life cycle assessment, and explains their interrelationships and application in carbon footprint assessment. The student explains the importance of carbon footprint results for emissions management and reduction, organisational decision-making and sustainability reporting.
Professional Skills: The student defines the boundaries of an organisation’s greenhouse gas inventory, identifies and classifies relevant emission sources, and selects an appropriate methodological approach for their quantification. The student searches for, selects and critically evaluates input data and emission factors, calculates greenhouse gas emissions, and assesses the quality, transparency, consistency and uncertainty of the data used and the results obtained. The student interprets carbon footprint results, identifies significant emission sources and compares options for reducing them. The student proposes and professionally justifies appropriate emission reduction measures and assesses their applicability to the environmental and strategic management of an organisation.
General Competences: The student independently and responsibly addresses complex tasks related to carbon footprint assessment, interpretation and management and critically works with professional, methodological, normative and data sources. The student assesses their relevance, currency, quality and limitations and transparently documents and professionally justifies the selected approach and assumptions adopted. The student clearly communicates and defends calculation results and proposed measures and formulates evidence-based recommendations to support organisational decision-making. When evaluating alternatives, the student integrates environmental, technical and economic considerations and independently updates their professional knowledge in response to developments in methodological, normative and reporting requirements.
