The course Water Management Structures provides students with basic knowledge of hydraulic structures and their functional and structural design. The course focuses on fundamental concepts and information required for the design of water management structures. Particular attention is paid to reservoirs and dams, water-retaining structures – weirs, waterways, and the basic principles of hydropower utilization. Students become familiar with the functions of individual types of hydraulic structures, their basic structural elements, and the principles of their design and operation.
Upon completion of the course, the student will acquire:
Knowledge
- characterize the basic types of hydraulic structures and explain their purpose and function;
- describe the basic structural elements of reservoirs, dams, weirs, and waterways;
- explain the basic principles of the design and operation of hydraulic structures;
describe the basic principles of hydropower utilization;
- demonstrate an understanding of basic professional terminology and technical information used in the design of water management structures.
Skills
- distinguish between individual types of hydraulic structures and their basic structural arrangements;
- assess basic functional and structural solutions of water management structures;
- use basic technical information when solving simple tasks in the field of hydraulic structures;
- apply acquired knowledge when solving basic tasks related to the design of reservoirs, dams, weirs, and waterways.
General Competences
- independently work with professional and technical information in the field of water management structures;
- formulate and professionally justify basic conclusions concerning the functional and structural design of hydraulic structures;
- integrate knowledge of hydraulic structures with knowledge of hydraulics, hydrology, and other technical disciplines when solving water management problems.
