Technical materials for design

Language of instruction čeština
Code 632-3030
Abbreviation TMD
Course title Technical materials for design
Coordinating department Department of Materials and Technologies for Vehicles
Course coordinator doc. Ing. Ivo Szurman, Ph.D.

Summary

This course will provide an understanding of the properties of engineering materials and their importance in the design process of industrial products. Students will gain an overview of the main groups of structural and design-relevant materials, particularly metals, polymers, composites, wood, and ceramic materials, and will understand the relationship between their microscopic structure, processing methods, and resulting mechanical and functional properties. The competencies acquired include familiarity with basic manufacturing and processing technologies and the ability to assess their impact on the quality, functionality, and aesthetics of the final product.

Students will become acquainted with basic methods of testing materials and measuring their properties, which will enable them to better interpret material behavior in real-world structural and design applications. They will be able to apply this knowledge when selecting appropriate materials and technological processes in the design of industrial products. Graduates of this course will be able to critically evaluate the suitability of individual material and technological solutions with regard to structural requirements, manufacturing capabilities, and the principles of sustainability and the circular economy in contemporary industrial design.
