Fundamentals of foundry technology

Summary

The aim of the course is to acquaint the student with the basic processes in the production of a casting from filling the cavity of the foundry mould with liquid metal to complete solidification of the metal. The student will be able to define and describe the various influences acting on these processes. For example, attention is given to the following areas: the use of permanent and disposable moulds in the production of castings, moulding mixtures and their components, precision casting technology, basic physical properties of melts, metal and alloy fluidity, design of gating systems, cast-mould interactions, crystallisation and solidification of castings, stresses in castings, principles of basic defects in castings.
