Subject syllabus

1.Introduction to Metal Production. Basic classification, overview of properties. History and present state. Characteristics of metal production development in the world and in the Czech Republic.
2.Description of Pyrometallurgical Processes in Metal Production. Thermal dissociation, metal oxidation, reduction. Ellingham diagrams. Reduction of metal oxides, Boudouard reaction.
3.Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Metal Production. Pourbaix diagrams.
4.Melting, Properties of Melts of Slags, Matte, and Raw Metals.
5.Characteristics of the Physicochemical Properties of Melts. Molten metals and slags. Molecular and ionic theory of slags.
6.Reactions Between Slag and Metal. Desulfurization, dephosphorization, deoxidation. Interaction of molten metals with gases, Sieverts' law.
7.Hydrometallurgical Methods of Metal Extraction. Adsorption, ion exchange, extraction, and cementation in hydrometallurgy.
8.Electrometallurgical Methods of Metal Production. Electrolysis, basic principles, metals produced by electrolysis.
9.Production of Pig Iron. Theoretical fundamentals of pig iron production, reduction and thermal processes in the blast furnace. Countercurrent flow of burden and gas in the blast furnace.
10.Steel Production in the Oxygen Converter.
11.Production of Electroslag Steel – Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF), Induction Furnaces.
12.Methods of Metal Refining. Secondary metallurgy. Production of special metals.
13.Steel Casting Processes. Continuous casting of metals.
