Subject syllabus

1. Production of Pig Iron: History and Present.
Development of iron production worldwide and in the Czech Republic. Energy and raw material limitations for future development. Deficiencies of current iron production technologies. Technological process of pig iron production using blast furnaces.
2. Raw Materials for Pig Iron Production: Iron Ores and Fluxing Additives.
Requirements, properties, and treatment options. Agglomeration and pelletizing of ores.
3. Fuels for Pig Iron Production: Coke – Production and Properties.
Quality requirements. Alternative fuels. Preparation of the blast furnace burden. Desired properties of the blast furnace burden.
4. Theoretical Fundamentals of Pig Iron Production.
Basic reactions in the blast furnace. Reduction of iron oxides. Direct and indirect reduction. Physicochemical processes in the oxidation zones of the blast furnace.
5. Steel Production – Trends, Raw Materials, Technologies.
