Language of instruction čeština
Code 653-2222
Abbreviation MAT
Course title Introduction to the study of materials
Coordinating department Department of Materials Engineering and Recycling
Course coordinator doc. Ing. Petra Váňová, Ph.D.

Summary

The course introduces students to the basic groups of technical materials, their structure, properties and applications. Attention is paid to methods of material characterization, mechanisms of strengthening, failure and degradation of materials and the basics of heat treatment of metallic materials. Students will gain a basic overview of metallic, ceramic, polymer and composite materials and their use in technical practice.
Knowledge
After completing the course, the student will:
• explain the basic principles of the internal structure of solids and its connection with the properties of materials;
• characterize the basic groups of technical materials, their properties and possible uses;
• clarify the basic principles of strengthening, failure and degradation of materials;
• explain the basic principles of heat treatment of steels.
Skills
After completing the course, the student will:
• classify a specific material into the appropriate group and assess its suitability for a given use;
• choose an appropriate method for basic characterization of the structure and mechanical properties of the material;
• analyse the connections between the structure and mechanical properties of materials;
• propose a procedure to increase the strength or toughness of the material;
• evaluate the basic manifestations of failure and degradation of materials and interpret their possible causes.
General competencies
After completing the course, the student will:
• independently choose an appropriate procedure for solving basic problems related to technical materials;
• expertly justifies the choice of material, characterization method or method of modifying its properties;
• interprets and clearly communicates the results of material evaluation;
• responsibly decides on the suitability of a material for a given technical application based on available information.
