Subject syllabus

- Introduction. Principles of joining of materials (bolted joint, wedge joint, welding, soldering, etc.) - overview, examples.
- Theory of welding, basic terms and divisions, types and methods of welding, types of welds, welding positions. Weld joint formation and its basic areas; deformation and internal stresses during welding.
- Fusion welding, physical basis of the process, nature of electric arc, melting and transfer of metal in the arc. Structure and properties of weld joint - weld metal, heat affected zone. Weldability and its evaluation, effect of chemical elements on weldability of steels. Types of welding cracks.
- Preheating - temperature and methods of its determination, interpass temperature, reheating and heat treatment after welding,
- Manual metal arc welding (MMA, SMAW), principle, basic characteristics of electrodes, advantages and disadvantages of the process. Submerged arc welding (SAW), principle, additive materials - wires and fluxes. Gas welding, flame cutting.
- Arc welding in a protective atmosphere - MIG/MAG (GMAW), TIG (GTAW), protective gases for different methods, additional materials.
- Special fusion welding methods - laser welding and cutting, plasma welding and cutting, electron beam welding.
- Pressure welding – forge welding, resistance welding, friction welding, explosion welding, ultrasonic and diffusion welding - principles and application.
- Qualification of a welding process - WPS and WPQR.
- Soft and hard soldering - principles, application. Bonding of metals, types of adhesives, properties and durability of bonded joints.
- Welding of materials for power industry - homogeneous and heterogeneous weld joints, selection of additional materials, weld strength factor (WSF).
- Effect of welding cycle on creep resistance of welded joints. Structural analysis of welded joints, degradation of weld joints due to creep or corrosion. I-IV type cracks in welded joints.
- Examples of expertise and search for causes of weld joint failure and accidents of welded structures.
