Environmental Engeneering

Summary

The course focuses on the three main issues of environmental pollution - air, water and soil pollution. Students will learn about the pollutants present in these environmental compartments and produced by selected anthropogenic activities. They will then learn follow-up strategies for detecting, monitoring and reducing or preventing pollution. Furthermore, attention will be paid to basic technologies for waste treatment, i.e. recycling technologies for selected types of industrial waste from metallurgical plants, electrical waste, polymer waste and construction and demolition waste. Last but not least, the course also deals with methods for the treatment of biodegradable wastes, focusing on the latest scientific research findings in this field. In the field of air protection, the course focuses on understanding the basic principles of the formation of pollutants from selected sources and their release into the air, with a focus on technologies for their minimisation. In the area of water protection, processes and technologies for the treatment of urban and industrial wastewater will be addressed, including advanced tertiary and quaternary wastewater treatment technologies with emphasis on enhanced removal of nitrogen, phosphorus and micropollutants, i.e. selected pharmaceuticals and microplastics. At the same time, options for reuse of treated water will be discussed. Current Czech legislation in the field of water protection and changes brought about by the new European Union legislation will also be addressed.
