Biogenic materials and structures in nanotechnology

Anotace

Students will be introduced to interesting interdisciplinary science topics as bionanotechnology and biomimetics and fundamentals of biomineralization. Biomimetics is a discipline studying the structure and function of biological systems as models for the design and engineering of new functional materials, systems and machines.
There is an enormous inspiration for nanotechnologists in nature and the potential of organisms and natural structures in the design and development of new materials is not yet exploited completely. Biological systems produce numerous materials with exceptional mechanical, optical or magnetic properties.
Nature is a specialist on nanotechnology, even though we may assess its subtlety thanks to more and more precise microscope techniques until recently. The differences between “nature-made” and “man-made” materials will be pointed out.
