A university is not made up of apparatuses and buildings. It is made up of people. For us, the University’s third role is also comes first. When our entire University moved from Příbram to Ostrava after the Second World War to be closer to the largest centre of industry, it was its personalities who built the “steel heart of the republic”. And this heart continues to beat even though the Moravian-Silesian Region and Ostrava are no longer dominated by mining and metallurgy.

Ostrava has become a green city with IT, engineering and construction companies. The University helps all of them to cope with the rapid development of trends from all over the world. In addition to the day-to-day operations of the University, the topics of ecology and sustainable energy sources are also a priority in our teaching, science and cooperation with industry.

“The commitment to social responsibility at all levels is intertwined in the daily activities and long-term strategy of VSB – Technical University of Ostrava”, says the University Rector Prof. RNDr. Václav Snášel, CSc.

University for life

University for life

The campus of VSB – Technical University of Ostrava is one of the largest in Central Europe. It is unique in its location and the combination of sports facilities, accommodation, laboratories, classrooms, lecture halls and offices into one unit. It is a natural part of the Poruba urban district. At the end of it, you will find our partner Moravian-Silesian Innovation Centre.

By combining knowledge from SMART CITIES, 5G network coverage, carsharing, photovoltaic cells, solar panels, heat pumps, window sensors, green roofs and other technologies, we are building our own city and University of the future. All with the knowledge that we are part of the public space for the citizens of Ostrava. We want technology to serve people to have a better life.

Energy committee

Established in 2019, the Energy Committee (EC) has been in operation at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava with the primary objective of proposing measures to reduce the overall energy consumption of the University campus. This goal is being achieved with the support of state-of-the-art technologies and the use of renewable energy resources. An essential mechanism for overseeing and controlling the flow of energy is an efficient energy management system. This system serves as the foundation upon which committee members propose measures and recommendations for minimising energy usage in buildings, including optimising the flow of electrical and thermal energy. The primary focus is on tracking and increasing the proportion of renewable energy resources while simultaneously decreasing the reliance on energy sources dependent on fossil fuels within the overall campus energy consumption.

The Energy Committee actively collaborates with other departments and units within the University. Its activities are a key part of VSB-TUO's efforts to effectively manage energy resources and reduce energy consumption, which is important for the sustainability and operation of our campus.

University for education

VSB-TUO believes in equal opportunities for all students, regardless of age, nationality or gender. The University is accessible to students and employees with special needs as it is barrier-free.

Popularisation of science and technology

We offer many not only technically oriented educational programmes both in schools and on the premises of the VSB-TUO classrooms and laboratories. We prepare various clubs and suburban camps for the children of our employees. The popularisation of science and technology is an important part of our work. We need to reach science enthusiasts as early as possible. The new VSB-TUO Junior University is designed for all curious boys and girls who enjoy technology and science. It can offer them interesting activities in various fields across our research workplaces.

University of the 3rd Age

U3V is open to the public aged 55 and over. Those who are interested can choose from degree programmes at the Faculty of Mining and Geology, the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology, the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Safety Engineering.

University kindergarten

The campus houses our own kindergarten, a unique educational facility for children as young as two years old. We primarily educate the children of our students and staff there and motivate them to be curious.

University for help

University for help

Our students and staff are aware that health is the most precious thing we have. Therefore, we focus our research on biomedical, biomechanical engineering and new materials for medicine. We also cooperate with the integrated rescue system segments, helping both medical professionals and their patients.

Fighting the COVID-19 pandemic

Our scientists immediately joined the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. At the beginning of the pandemic, we prepared over 26,000 litres of disinfectant for the Moravian-Silesian Region. We created 7 thousand protective shields for health workers across the country using 3D plastic printing technology. During the pandemic, our students helped in vaccination centres and tested the employees of VSB-TUO. We are ready to help further, to offer our expertise, human and material resources, and, above all, the energy of all who want to get involved.

A VSB-TUO Drop of Blood and Technology Goes to the Bottom of It

Since 2016, the University has held a blood donation relay, with over 600 students and staff participating to date, many of whom donated blood and blood components for the first time. The aim of the activity is to make our students become regular blood donors. Some students and employees have also registered in the Czech National Bone Marrow Donor Register.

University for people

Whether we are working on a research project or preparing an event, we do it for the people – our students, staff, alumni and the general public.

Our community

Our University brings together not only a variety of student organizations, but also the Retiree Club. Every year, we hold special alumni reunions – the Golden Graduation after 50 years and the Diamond Graduation after 60 years. We are proud of our alumni and bring them together in our ALUMNI Network so that they do not lose touch with their Alma Mater. They are a valuable source of information for us, as their feedback clearly shows us the employability of our graduates on the job market.

Our events

We never miss an opportunity to introduce science and technology to the public. You can see us at major festivals such as Colours of Ostrava and its Meltingpot discussion forum, TEDex Ostrava, Festival in the Streets or the pan-European event Night of Scientists. For children, we organise, the Improve Your Technology Day, the Improve Your Technology competition, and for secondary school graduates, we organise Open Days. The matters of the heart for us is our own University Art & Science Festival, which takes place regularly at the beginning of the academic year.

Visitor Centres

VSB – Technical University of Ostrava has educational centres that are open to the public. These are the Ostrava Planetarium and the Geology Pavilion, which are part of the Faculty of Mining and Geology. In addition to excursions, they offer a number of educational programmes.
