Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to identify the principles of instrument flight, describe the functions of flight instruments and avionics systems installed in modern aircraft, explain IFR procedures, Low Visibility Operations (LVO), Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC), the principles of flight automation and human factors, and the procedures for handling abnormal and emergency situations.
Students will be able to apply instrument flight procedures in model operational scenarios, perform normal and emergency IFR procedures in a flight simulator environment, operate avionics systems and flight automation during flight operations, cooperate effectively within a multi-crew environment, and evaluate the suitability of selected procedures with regard to flight safety and applicable aviation regulations.
Students will be able to independently resolve model instrument flight scenarios, justify the selected operational procedures based on applicable aviation regulations, operational limitations, and aviation safety principles, take responsibility for decision-making during flight operations, and evaluate operational risks associated with IFR operations.
Successful completion of the course forms part of the theoretical training for the Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL). The course is based on Module 022 – Aircraft General Knowledge – Instrumentation, Module 040 – Human Performance and Limitations, and Module 070 – Operational Procedures, as specified in Annex II to Commission Decision 2016/008/R. It builds upon the courses Aircraft Instrumentation I and Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering in Aviation I.
The course content focuses on the description of the principles and functions of instruments and avionics systems of modern transport aircraft designed for instrument flight. It also aims to provide students with knowledge of the legislation governing instrument flight and the procedures for conducting instrument flight operations, including procedures for operations in low visibility conditions.
In addition, the course introduces students to practical procedures, which are practiced throughout the semester using a flight simulator.
