Subject syllabus

Lecture Outline: Geohazards after Mine Closure
1. Introduction to geohazards after mine closure – transition from the mining to the post-mining phase, definition of hazard and risk, motivation for risk management.
2. Legislative framework and responsibilities – mining law, the role of the state in permanent mine closure, liability for damages and prevention.
3. Types of hazards after mine closure – overview of the main types of hazardous phenomena (subsidence, landslides, collapses, gas emissions, flooding, contamination, waste dump fires).
4. Surface instability – mechanisms of subsidence, fissures, sinkholes, induced seismicity and impacts on infrastructure.
5. Collapses of shafts and main mining works – mechanisms of collapses, investigation methods and monitoring.
6. Gas-related risks – methane, CO₂, radon; migration mechanisms of gases to the surface and monitoring methods.
7. Hydrogeological impacts – mine flooding, changes in groundwater and surface water flows, consequences for the territory.
8. Environmental contamination – mining wastes, acid mine drainage, contaminant dispersion, methodology of environmental studies.
9. Waste dump fires and heating – mechanisms of ignition, long-term combustion and toxic gas emissions.
10. Risk assessment – hazard studies, hazard maps and classification of risk areas.
11. Risk management tools – mining risk prevention plans (PPRM), abandoned mines databases, and other spatial planning instruments.
12. Prevention and remediation strategies – monitoring, remediation works, expropriation, land-use regulation, communication with the public.
13. Case studies and applications – examples from France and Europe, practical excursion.
