Summary
The course introduces students to the basic economic principles underlying the functioning of a market economy and the behaviour of individual economic agents under different market structures. These principles are applied to the specific characteristics of the raw materials and mining industries in the Czech Republic and the European Union. Attention is paid to the mechanisms of supply and demand, market functioning and factors influencing market developments, including the specific features of raw materials markets. The course also focuses on the analysis and interpretation of current economic data and introduces students to the basic mechanisms of government economic policy. Students discuss current economic issues and assess government approaches to addressing contemporary economic challenges in the raw materials and mining industries.
Upon completion of the course, the student will achieve the following learning outcomes:
a) Professional Knowledge
The student understands basic economic concepts and the principles of a market economy and understands the behaviour of individual economic agents under different market structures. The student understands the basic mechanisms of market functioning and economic policy-making and their specific features in the raw materials and mining industries in the Czech Republic and the EU.
b) Professional Skills
The student is able to distinguish between different market structures and identify factors affecting the functioning of the market system. The student is able to analyse and interpret economic data and apply basic economic principles when assessing current economic developments and the situation in the raw materials and mining industries.
c) General Competences
The student is able to independently assess current economic issues and formulate arguments based on basic economic principles and available data. The student is able to discuss the impacts of economic policy and critically evaluate government approaches to addressing current economic challenges in the raw materials and mining industries.
