Summary

The course provides a basic overview of systems thinking, systems theory, and the principles of control. Students will become familiar with different types of systems, their properties and behaviour, and gain fundamental knowledge of systems analysis and modelling methods.

Attention is given to system dynamics, principles of regulation and automatic control, fundamentals of optimization, and decision-making processes. The course also covers stochastic, distributed, and adaptive systems and their role in modern engineering applications.

Students will gain an overview of the application of systems theory to the analysis and control of technical, transportation, energy, and other systems and become familiar with selected practical applications of the systems approach.

Professional Knowledge
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- explain the fundamental principles of systems theory and control;
- describe basic types of systems and their properties;
- characterize methods of systems analysis and modelling;
- explain the principles of regulation and automatic control;
- describe the fundamentals of optimization, decision-making, and adaptive systems.

Professional Skills
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- distinguish between different types of systems and their characteristics;
- interpret simple system models;
- analyse basic system properties and behaviour;
- assess the role of regulatory and control mechanisms within a system;
- apply basic systems-thinking approaches to engineering problems.

General Competencies
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- apply systems thinking to problem solving;
- search for and interpret professional information in the field of systems and control;
- understand the relationships between system structure, behaviour, and control;
- orient themselves in contemporary applications of systems theory and control.
