Summary

The course provides a basic introduction to selected production and industrial technologies and their environmental implications. It focuses particularly on energy production, mineral extraction, coke production, metallurgical and mechanical engineering processes and provides a foundation for subsequent specialised courses dealing with individual technologies and their environmental impacts.
Professional Knowledge: The student explains the basic principles of electricity and heat generation and characterises the main energy sources and their environmental impacts. The student describes the basic stages of mineral extraction, the principles of underground and surface mining and their impacts on the environment. The student explains the basic technological principles of coking, sintering, pig iron and steel production and characterises their main raw material and energy inputs and outputs. The student describes the principles of metal forming, foundry production and basic machining processes. For individual technologies, the student characterises the main environmental impacts and basic options for their mitigation.
Professional Skills: The student identifies and describes the basic technological operations of selected production processes and identifies their main material and energy inputs, products, by-products and other outputs. The student determines significant sources of air emissions, wastewater, waste and other environmental impacts and explains their relationship to specific technological operations. The student compares selected production processes in terms of raw material and energy consumption and their principal environmental impacts.
General Competences: The student integrates basic knowledge of production technologies with their environmental implications and applies this knowledge when assessing selected production processes. The student works independently with professional and technical information sources, assesses their relevance and uses them to formulate and justify conclusions. The student clearly presents the results of their assessment and develops the ability to evaluate production technologies within broader technological, environmental and economic contexts.
