Subject syllabus

1. Energy Sector and Energy Production – basic methods of electricity and heat generation, energy sources, the energy mix of the Czech Republic, renewable and non-renewable energy sources and their environmental impacts.
2. Mineral Extraction – General Principles – exploration and investigation of mineral deposits, preparation for extraction, mining, processing and transportation of raw materials, mine closure and site remediation. Basic classification of mining methods according to deposit characteristics, extracted raw materials and extraction methods.
3. Underground Mining – principles of underground mining, preparation and access to mineral deposits, mining methods, transportation and ventilation of underground workings; environmental impacts of underground mining and options for their mitigation.
4. Surface Mining – principles of surface mining, overburden removal, extraction, transportation and material disposal; environmental impacts of surface mining, land reclamation and restoration of post-mining areas.
5. Coke Production – raw materials for coke production, coal carbonisation, principles and operation of coke oven batteries, by-products of coking; environmental impacts of coke production and options for their reduction.
6. Sintering and Production of Pig Iron and Cast Iron – basic properties and types of iron and cast iron, raw materials for production, preparation of the iron ore burden and principles of sintering, material and energy flows, principles of pig iron production in blast furnaces and subsequent production operations.
7 Environmental Impacts of Sintering and Iron Production – consumption of raw materials and energy, generation of air emissions, wastewater, waste and by-products, and options for reducing environmental impacts.
8. Steel Production – principles of steel production, basic oxygen converters, electric arc furnaces and other current technologies; historical development of steelmaking processes and basic technological differences.
9. Environmental Impacts of Steel Production – energy and raw material consumption, emissions, waste and by-products, material recycling and options for reducing the environmental impacts of production.
10. Hot Forming of Metals – basic principles of plastic deformation, rolling, forging, production of tubes and other metallurgical semi-finished products, technological conditions and characteristics of individual processes.
11. Cold Forming of Metals – cold rolling and pressing, wire drawing and other forming processes; basic technological parameters, material and energy consumption, and environmental impacts of metal forming processes.
12. Foundry Technology – basic principles of foundry production, preparation of moulds and cores, casting methods, production and finishing of castings; material and energy flows and environmental impacts of foundry processes.
13. Mechanical Engineering and Machining – fundamentals of machining, turning, drilling, milling, grinding and other machining processes; metalworking fluids, generation and recovery of metal waste, energy consumption and other environmental aspects of mechanical engineering production.

Study materials, presentations, assignments and other resources related to individual topics are made available to students through the university LMS. Students use these resources for class preparation, independent study, preparation of the seminar paper and continuous study throughout the course.
