A COMPLEX SYSTEM OF AUTOMATIC RECOGNITION AND CLASSIFICATION OF FLAT WHEELS IN RAIL TRANSPORT

A COMPLEX SYSTEM OF AUTOMATIC RECOGNITION AND CLASSIFICATION OF FLAT WHEELS IN RAIL TRANSPORT

Problem description:

The operation of rail transport brings many pitfalls. One of these is wear due to high strain because of everyday operation. In rail transport, strain of the wheels causes deformations and formation of flat spots on the wheelset (its circumferential part in contact with the rail).

The formation of the flat spots causes impacts on the rails. Such impacts damage both the rails and the rail vehicle chassis.  Nowadays, this problem is approached using a number of principles, mainly on the base of light systems.

Technology description:

Jan Nedoma’s team noticed the problems with electromagnetic interference that the standard systems need to deal with as well as the high costs of the light systems. They focused on these two key weaknesses and developed a system based on optical fibres, which is not affected by electromagnetic interference and lowers the costs.

The pilot operation implemented in one railway depot in Ostrava confirmed the functionality of the device. It shows that the detection system may lower the purchase costs by as much as 70 %. With this technology, the end customer also lowers the repair costs both for the damaged rails and damaged rail vehicles caused by impacts from wheel flat spots. VŠB-TUO launches this technology on the market and offers commercial cooperation.
