A JOINT WITH TWO DEGREES OF FREEDOM

Problem description:

Increased productivity requirements are associated with high performance demands on workers. Physically working employees are exposed to a gradual fatigue of the muscular system during working hours, which may as a consequence of joint and muscular system overload lead to health difficulties later in life. To reduce enormous loads and fatigue, exoskeletons have been used.

Older exoskeletons available on the market were expensive and thus used only by the military sector and rescue services. However, due to lower costs, the target market group is becoming bigger and exoskeletons are being deployed in industry, health care, and leisure time activities.

Technology description:

The joint with two degrees of freedom solution makes part of an exoskeleton. Compared to the existing solutions, it is a low-cost, durable, and space saving one.

The technology consists of several semi-circular rails. Two rails are always mutually perpendicular to other two rails. The controlled-motion mechanism is based on cogwheels and semi-circular rail gearing, which allows for a wide range of movement corresponding to the human wrist joint movements. The added value of the technology is the space-saving character of the mechanism, its durability, simplicity and low manufacturing costs.
