17.2.1. Relationships with regional NGOs and government for SDG policy
VSB - Technical University of Ostrava actively supports and informs government policies related to sustainable development through multiple projects across local, regional, and international levels.
REFRESH
The REFRESH (Research Excellence For REgion Sustainability and High-tech Industries) project serves as a strong example of VSB - Technical University of Ostrava's role in providing expert advice and support to government efforts at various levels, particularly within the Moravian-Silesian Region. As the principal investigator for this "flagship" project, VSB-TUO is instrumental in advancing the SMARAGD vision - a regional initiative aimed at creating a "SMARt And Green District" through enhanced research, sustainable energy solutions, and technological innovations. This initiative directly addresses the government’s priorities for economic transformation and environmental sustainability, demonstrating VSB-TUO’s active role in guiding policy and innovation in alignment with regional objectives.
NATIONAL CENTRE FOR ENERGY II
VSB-TUO leads the National Centre for Energy II (NCE II), positioning the University as a key driver in national energy strategy development and innovation. The External Centre Council includes representatives from key governmental and industry organisations such as the Czech Association of Energy Sector Employers, the Moravian-Silesian Region, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Through the strategic linkage of NCE II with the Centre for Advanced Nuclear Technologies (CANUT II), VSB-TUO is expanding its research scope from renewable and storage systems to advanced nuclear technologies, reinforcing its leadership in the development of low-carbon and sustainable energy solutions in the Czech Republic.
CENTRE OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH
VSB‑TUO is a member of the Centre of Environmental Research project, created to support the applied research needs of the Ministry of the Environment, which serves as the primary user of the project’s results. The Centre brings together eight leading research organisations and universities to conduct interdisciplinary studies on waste management, circular economy, and environmental security, providing evidence-based insights to inform national policies and strategies.
MORAVIAN-SILESIAN HYDROGEN CLUSTER
The University is actively engaged in clusters such as the Moravian-Silesian Hydrogen Cluster, where it serves as a main founder, working to develop a hydrogen ecosystem that supports clean energy transition and economic transformation. The implementation of the Strategy for the Development of Hydrogen Technologies in the Moravian-Silesian Region aims to create a framework for effective cooperation between the private sector and public administration in the development area of the Moravian-Silesian Region for the deployment of hydrogen technologies on a regional scale with the future intended financial support from the Operational Fund Fair Transformation.
