DOTA 2 VŠB-TUO tournament

Project by David Pastor, a student at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

In his project, Davis prepared a tournament in the computer game DOTA 2 for his colleagues.

DOTA 2 is a computer, strategy and team game. It can be compared to chess, only an individual controls one of the five characters in one of the two teams instead of the entire chessboard, and the human factor together with the added mechanics push the difficulty up to the level of 4D chess. One battle lasts on average from 35 minutes to 45 minutes. The strategic element of the game is the choice and the execution of actions of all players, which are a response to the actions of opponents in time. Under normal conditions, the game is won by the team, not by the individual.

The tournament already took place on November 15, 2024. Instead of the traditional semi-final spider, the organizers used the „each with each“ format in the tournament. The results then determined a spider in which the winning team advanced to the finals while the remaining two teams battled for the last place in the finals. The final was the best of three games. This format was more friendly and fun for non-professional participants as well as the audience.

Of the allocated financial support of CZK 10,000, David used CZK 9,051.

Photo Contest

Project by Kateřina Kolaříková, a student at the Faculty of Electical Engineering and Computer Science

If you like to take pictures, Katka’s project is just for you!

The photography competition is intended for amateurs and professionals from among students who want to share their view of the world, the university environment, studies or life in the dormitories. As part of the competition, everyone will be able to submit only one photo. Campus Cinema

Project by Vladimír Glogar, a student at the Faculty of Economics

Vláďa is a fountain of ideas and a constant in the Studentopolis program. Last year, he prepared the Rozkopni.to project for a cycle of lectures with interesting people from practice, which continues under the banner of EKF, and was one of the main faces of our promotional campaign this year. We are therefore happy that his next project Campus Cinema also succeeded in the evaluation. As part of the project, Vláďa and his co-researchers will arrange a public projection of films for students and the public on the grounds of our university. The benefit of the project is the revitalization of the campus in the afternoon and evening hours, new possibilities for activities for students who are housed in the dormitories and making the university more attractive for its future students.

Student-OFF

Project by David Panoš, a student at the Faculty of Mining and Geology

David lacks a place to relax and socialize outside the classic bars on the university campus. That’s why he decided to write a project, find a space and change it. He would like to create a place for friendly and informal meeting and spending free time, with the offer of renting board games and game consoles (retro games, PlayStation, Xbox) where students can play alone or in groups. The project will also include themed evenings and events that will support getting to know each other and shared experiences. Student-OFF responds to the need to strengthen the community life of students in the dormitories and offers an alternative for those looking for other entertainment options. The project supports the development of the student community and fulfils the university’s mission as a place not only for studying, but also for personal growth and making friends.

Biodiversity on the VŠB–TUO campus: Insect hotels

Project by Jana Růžička, a student at the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology

The goal of Jana’s project is to support biodiversity in the VŠB-TUO campus by installing insect hotels. In the original design of the project, insect hotels were to be purchased and installed. However, the evaluation committee modified the project, and the insect hotels will be produced as part of the development of the student community. The selection of suitable places on the VŠB-TUO campus for their installation will take place in cooperation with entomologist Mgr. Monika Mazalová, Ph.D. (UPOL), the operational department of the university and the university arborist Pavel Mitura.

The 160 cm tall insect hotel is divided into 2parts. The lower, so called „Broučkovník“, is reinforced with acacia prisms and the upper part is made of durable larch wood. In this section, there are hollows that attract solitary bees and diverse wood with holes for various insects, including butterflies. The upper part will be finished with a moss bell made of coconut shell and cones. Other compartments contain natural materials that provide shelter for insects. Burnt perforated brick in the lower part serves as a shelter and decoration. The maintenance of the hotel is easy thanks to the use of sustainable materials (larch wood and pinecones) and consists of replenishing the fillings, which ensures long-term functionality. Insect hotels contribute to increasing biodiversity and supporting useful species. They will be produced from regional natural materials with an emphasis on sustainability and reducing the ecological footprint of the project.

VŠBazar

Project by Martina Sousedíková, a student at the Faculty of Mining and Geology

Martina’s project is focused on sustainability and consists in the realization of an online platform for donating, selling or exchanging things. The platform will only be available to members of the university community based on their VŠB-TUO login data. Users can upload a photo of the item on the platform, add a brief description (e.g. condition, purpose, size) and provide contact information for the person offering the item. All transactions will take place in person based on an agreement between users, thus saving on packaging and postage. The university will not bear any legal responsibility for the condition or quality of the subjects. It should contain various subcategories such as textiles, books, electronics and other items.

Disc golf Start VŠB

Project by David Kolařík, a student at the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology

David is a big disc golf fan and player. He would like to introduce his hobby to the students and employees of VŠB–TUO in the form of the fun and practical event right on campus. Disc golf is a sport that combines precision and movement in nature and its rules are similar to classic golf. During the academy, participants will learn the basics of throwing technique, the rules of the game and tips to improve performance. Goulashfest

Project by Kateřina Kolaříková, a student at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

The student association Studentooo wants to attract students and employees to an event whose main theme is the preparation of goulash, which is a popular dish in Central Europe. The event will be connected with the competition where teams, made up of students or employees of VŠB-TUO, cook different types of goulash and try to win the title of the best goulash team. Each team has the opportunity to bring their own unique recipe and preparation method. The stews will be evaluated both by an expert jury and by visitors to the event. The taste, originality, appearance and overall atmosphere of the stand will be evaluated. In addition to cooking, the students plan to supplement the event with an accompanying program, e.g. competitions for visitors, workshops and lectures on the history and tradition of goulash.

Silent Disco

Project by Kateřina Kolaříková, a student at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Have you even been woken up by loud music from your neighbours and their evening parties? Katka came up with the idea of organizing such a party that would not disturb anyone in the vicinity. At this party, the music will not be played from the speakers, but each of the participants will have headphones on their heads, so they can enjoy the music among everyone, but at the same time in private. Each participant can choose music according to their own taste and, thanks to the high-quality sound, fully concentrate on listening without distractions from the surroundings. At the same time, the quiet environment eliminates excessively loud speech from others, which allows participants not only to dance and enjoy the music, but also to chat, get to know each other and strengthen relationships with classmates in a pleasant atmosphere. The event thus represents a friendly alternative to the hectic club environment.
