On the Christmas Wave

On the Christmas Wave

Kristýna, student of the Faculty of Economics

Kristýna loves Christmas and wanted to share the festive atmosphere with others as well. That is why, together with her mentor, she prepared a Christmas creative workshop for students and university staff. This creative project focused on coming together, slowing down during the pre-Christmas rush, and enjoying the joy of handmade decorations.

The workshop took place as part of the ceremonial lighting of the VSB-TUO Christmas tree on December 1, 2025, and received very positive feedback. Students and employees of the university gathered to create Christmas candle holders or Advent wreaths and tune in to the upcoming holiday season.

The pleasant atmosphere of the event was enhanced by Christmas melodies playing during the workshop, and light refreshments were also provided. All participants had the chance to taste homemade Christmas cookies that Kristýna baked herself, adding an even more personal and warm touch to the workshop.

Approved financial support: CZK 22,000

The funds were used mainly for materials for making wreaths and candle holders.

80th Anniversary of the VŠB–TUO Orchestra and “Advent Full of Wings

80th Anniversary of the VSB-TUO Orchestra and “Advent Full of Wings"

Mirek, student of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Mirek plays in the VSB-TUO Orchestra, which is an integral part of the cultural and social life of the university. In 2025, the orchestra celebrated its beautiful 80th anniversary. The members decided to mark this significant milestone not only as a musical celebration, but also as an opportunity to help others. The anniversary was therefore linked with a charitable dimension, resulting in a relaxed charity event entitled *“80th Anniversary of the VSB-TUO Orchestra and Advent Full of Wings.”*

This exceptional event offered visitors not only a festive musical program in the spirit of Advent, but also a pleasant atmosphere full of togetherness, joy, and solidarity. The event took place on Saturday, November 22, 2025, in the university auditorium and was enjoyed by students, university staff, and the general public.

From the allocated amount of CZK 26,000, a total of CZK 22,496 was used.

Jana, student of the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology

Jana’s projects are closely connected with nature. This year, she focused on birds. The aim of the project is to create suitable nesting conditions for small and endangered bird species that contribute to natural insect regulation and the stability of the urban ecosystem, while also strengthening environmental awareness within the university community.

The project includes two birdhouse-making workshops—one for university students and employees, and another for children from the VSB-TUO University Kindergarten. The birdhouses, made from natural and recyclable materials, will be installed across the campus, with one of them equipped with a camera for educational purposes.

Piano in Building C

Piano in Building C

Tomáš, student of the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology

The idea behind Tomáš’s project is to contribute to improving students’ mental well-being through music and to offer them a space for relaxation and rest. Playing the piano, as well as listening to it, can serve as a natural tool for reducing stress, calming the mind, and supporting creativity.

As part of the project, Tomáš plans to purchase a piano that will be placed in publicly accessible university spaces and freely available to all students, staff, and visitors. The piano will become a place for spontaneous meetings, music sharing, and cultural engagement. The project supports not only mental health, but also the development of musical talent, interpersonal relationships, and an open, friendly atmosphere at the university.

Approved financial support: CZK 37,000.

Chess Tournament

Chess Tournament

Soňa, student of the Faculty of Safety Engineering

Soňa is a passionate chess player and during her time at the university she discovered that many other students and staff share an interest in chess. Based on this experience, she decided to organize a chess tournament that would create space not only for competition, but also for meeting people across faculties and job positions.

The goal of the tournament is to support the development of logical and strategic thinking, concentration skills, and fair play in a friendly and open environment. The event will offer participants the opportunity to test their skills, meet new opponents, and spend time together outside of regular study or work duties. The tournament will be held in a relaxed atmosphere and will be open to both experienced players and those who want to play chess primarily for enjoyment.

Approved financial support: CZK 15,000.

Build it sweet

Build it sweet

Růžena, student of the Faculty of Civil Engineering

Růžena studies at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, and her builder’s spirit is unmistakable. In her project *Build It Sweet!*, she combines technical thinking with creativity and playfulness, inviting students from all faculties to an unconventional team challenge. The event focuses on cooperation, imagination, and the joy of creating together outside the usual academic environment.

The goal will be to build the most interesting and original structure from unconventional materials—sponge fingers, jam, Nutella, and other sweets. The event will take place in the auditorium of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, creating a space for creativity, interfaculty cooperation, fun, and a university full of treats.

Approved financial support: CZK 30,000.

Campus Full of Breaths, Vol. 2

Campus Full of Breaths, Vol. 2

Daniel, student of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Daniel’s project builds on last year’s successful project by Pavlína and aims to organize the second edition of a small orchestra festival within the university environment. The event continues the tradition of enlivening the campus with live music and offers students and staff a cultural experience during a regular university day.

This year’s edition will welcome orchestras from the Vratimov and Němčice elementary art schools, whose young musicians will present a repertoire close in style to the target audience. The program will therefore be attractive and accessible not only to lovers of classical music, but also to the wider university community.

The festival also has a promotional dimension—the invited orchestra members are mostly high school students, and the event will allow them to get to know the university environment and campus atmosphere more closely. Musical performances will enrich everyday movement around the university, for example on the way to the canteen, and help create an open, friendly, and culturally vibrant space.

Don´t be Fancy, Just get Dancy!

Don´t be Fancy, Just get Dancy!

Katka, student of the Faculty of Economics

This project follows last year’s highly successful series of dance workshops of various styles, which attracted great interest across the university community. This year, participants will again have the opportunity to try a wide range of dance classes led by professional instructors, as well as talented students and university staff who actively engage in dance.

You can look forward to trial lessons in styles such as street dance, dancehall, contemporary, zumba, and many others. The workshops are open to everyone regardless of prior dance experience, and their goal is to support movement, the joy of dance, relaxation, and social interaction in an informal environment.

A new feature of this year will be an outdoor dance floor—classes held under the open sky that will offer a unique atmosphere, freedom of movement, and a pleasant connection between dance and the outdoor campus space. The program will also include an afterparty for dancers and instructors, providing space for sharing experiences, informal meetings, and networking.

Goulash Fest

Goulash Fest

Katka, student of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

With her project, Katka builds on last year’s successful goulash cooking competition. Teams composed of students and university staff cook various types of goulash and compete for the title of the best goulash team. The final dishes are evaluated both by an expert jury made up of university management and by the public.

The significance of the Goulash Fest project lies primarily in strengthening community and team spirit among participants and across the entire university. The event provides space for developing teamwork and organizational skills—not only for the organizers, who must plan and coordinate the event, but also for the participants, who need to form a well-coordinated team to increase their chances of winning.

Approved financial support: CZK 40,000.

Academic Gold Panning – Competition for the VSB Cup

Academic Gold Panning – Competition for the VSB Cup

David, student of the Faculty of Mining and Geology

With David and his project, the university campus will symbolically return to the era of the gold rush and offer visitors an unusual experiential activity in the form of gold panning. Participants will be able to try traditional panning techniques themselves and work with real gold flakes, which they will pan and take home in small vials as original souvenirs.

The event is intended for students, staff, and the general public and emphasizes shared experiences, fun, and informal social interaction. The project will help enliven the campus, strengthen community life, and connect different groups of university visitors. At the same time, it will present VSB-TUO as an open and inspiring space—not only a place for teaching and research, but also a place where unique and unforgettable experiences are created.

Approved financial support: CZK 49,860.

Vote It Through!

Vote It Through!

Ondra, student of the Faculty of Economics

Ondra’s project aims to clearly and practically introduce students to the functioning of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, and to show how European legislation is created and approved within these institutions. The project responds to the need for better understanding of EU decision-making processes and their impact on the everyday lives of citizens and member states.

Through an interactive simulation, students will try out the roles of Members of the European Parliament and representatives of EU member states in the Council. They will act on behalf of a specific country or political group, engage in negotiations, defend positions, seek compromises, and participate in voting. Participants will gain practical experience with political decision-making, develop their argumentation, communication, and negotiation skills, and better understand the complexity of European politics.

The project will culminate in a final vote of both the European Parliament and the Council of the EU on whether to approve or reject the proposed legislation. The project will offer students not only educational benefits, but also a unique experience that connects theory with practice and encourages active interest in public affairs and the functioning of the European Union.

Approved financial support: CZK 27,000.
