VSB-TUO plays a key role in the development of society, not only by providing higher education and advancing scientific knowledge but also by contributing to the development of industrial partners, public institutions, and the nonprofit sector—particularly in the region where it operates. This impact extends beyond Ostrava and the Moravian-Silesian Region to include other campuses where the University operates. In particular, the University‘s collaboration with municipal and regional authorities, stakeholders, associations, and other organisations is crucial for achieving their shared sustainable development goals.
VSB-TUO has long supported entrepreneurship and innovation in the Region, creating job opportunities for its graduates, many of whom secure positions with higher added value. This contributes to the prosperity of the city and enhances its attractiveness to investors. Beyond these activities, the University works on strengthening its scientific capacities by significantly expanding its international research teams.

Working with public authorities to shape a sustainable future
(17.2.1. Relationships with regional NGOs and government for SDG policy)
VSB - Technical University of Ostrava (VSB–TUO) contributes to sustainable development policy and regional strategies through applied research, expert knowledge and cooperation with public authorities, regional stakeholders and non-governmental organisations. Its activities address environmental protection, climate adaptation, the circular economy and the sustainable transformation of the Moravian-Silesian Region.
CEVOOH: VSB–TUO participates in the Centre of Environmental Research (CEVOOH), a consortium of eight research organisations and universities established to address the applied research needs of the Ministry of the Environment. The Centre focuses on waste management, the circular economy and environmental security. Its research provides scientific evidence and expert knowledge to support the development of environmental policies, strategies and regulations.
REFRESH: Through the REFRESH, VSB–TUO contributes research and expertise to the sustainable transformation of the Moravian-Silesian Region. The project addresses regional challenges related to sustainable energy, environmental applications, digitalisation, transport and advanced materials. Its research activities support regional development priorities and provide knowledge relevant to strategic planning.
Open ESG data platform – CERNA.ENVI.AI: VSB–TUO, the Moravian-Silesian Region and the public organisation Black Cube signed a tripartite memorandum to establish the open ESG data platform cerna.envi.ai. The Moravian-Silesian Region will provide regional data, define sustainability priorities and use the platform's outputs for planning and investment decisions. VSB–TUO, through its Faculty of Materials Science and Technology and Net Zero Lab, will contribute expertise in ESG methodologies, impact modelling and data validation, and support the development of AI tools and analytics. Black Cube will develop the open ESG dataset, reporting and prediction tools, and user interfaces.The platform is intended to enable long-term monitoring of the impacts of regional policies in climate, energy, transport and climate adaptation, supporting evidence-based planning and investment decisions.
Bringing stakeholders together to advance sustainable development
(17.2.2. Cross sectoral dialogue about SDGs)
VSB–Technical University of Ostrava (VSB–TUO) initiates and participates in cross-sectoral cooperation and dialogue on sustainable development, connecting academia, public authorities, industry and international partners to address shared environmental, energy and regional development challenges.
International Energy and Environment Conference: Organised by VSB–TUO's Centre for Energy and Environmental Technologies (CEET), IEEC provides an international platform for dialogue among researchers, academics, industry experts and representatives of public administration. The conference addresses challenges at the intersection of energy and the environment, promoting knowledge exchange, international collaboration and discussion of sustainable energy solutions.
Roundtable on the European Green Deal and its impact on regional industry (May 2024): The Faculty of Materials Science and Technology organised a roundtable discussion on the impact of the European Green Deal on industry in the European Union and the Moravian-Silesian Region. The event brought together candidates for the European Parliament from different political parties, representatives of regional industry, academics and students. Participants discussed the implications of the green transition for regional businesses, including sustainable industrial development, environmental technologies, project financing and employment. The event provided an opportunity for political, academic and business stakeholders to exchange views on a major European and regional policy issue.

U!REKA Alliance: VSB-TUO is part of a strong university community under the name U!REKA (Urban Research and Education Knowledge Alliance), which brings together seven European higher education institutions. Together, they are taking significant steps to strengthen European goals in the field of climate neutrality, through a common long-term strategy for education, research, innovation, and services to society.
FIP-AI@VSB-TUO: VSB-TUO has teamed up with the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, through its Fraunhofer IWU and Fraunhofer ICT institutes, to establish the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform for Applied Artificial Intelligence for Materials and Manufacturing at VSB-TUO (FIP-AI@VSB-TUO), the only Fraunhofer Innovation Platform in the Czech Republic. This collaboration focuses on developing energy management technologies, artificial intelligence, and intelligent production systems to advance sustainable industrial practices. It aligns with SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy).
Making a difference through charity and community engagement

Technika RUN – Charity Run: VSB–TUO organises Technika RUN, an annual charity running event that combines sport, community engagement and support for people in need. Through participation in the event, students, employees, alumni and members of the public contribute to charitable causes. In recent years, the proceeds have supported organisations including Mobile hospice Ondrášek, and Doctors Without Borders, demonstrating the University's commitment to solidarity and community support.
Support for Mobilní hospic Ondrášek: VSB–TUO supports Mobile hospice Ondrášek, which provides palliative care for terminally ill children and adults. The University contributes through charitable initiatives such as the Technika Run and the annual Christmas Auction for a Good Cause.
Křídlení Foundation: VSB–Technical University of Ostrava (VSB–TUO) cooperates with non-profit and charitable organisations, including the Křídlení Foundation, which develops long-term networks of relationships and mutual support. VSB–TUO hosts charity concerts and cultural events, such as Advent Full of KŘÍDLENÍ. The 2025 edition welcomed over 1,500 visitors and supported 37 local non-profit organisations, raising CZK 499,683 through charitable activities. The event brings together the university community, non-profit organisations and the public to promote solidarity and support local communities.
Báňská Blood Donation Relay: Since 2016, VSB–TUO has organised the Báňská Blood Donation Relay, encouraging students and employees to donate blood. More than 800 members of the university community have participated, contributing to public health and well-being.
Association of Social Responsibility: VSB–TUO is a member of the Association of Social Responsibility, a Czech platform promoting sustainability, corporate social responsibility and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
ESN VSB–TUO: ESN VSB–TUO, a non-profit international student organisation, supports the integration of international students into the university and local community. Through volunteering, charitable events and cultural exchange activities, it promotes social inclusion, multicultural understanding and community engagement.

Quality education for sustainability
VSB - Technical University of Ostrava aims to set an example for individuals and institutions in their approach to sustainability and to contribute to the development of new technologies, methods, and ideas that support sustainability. Our vision is to serve as a hub for education and awareness in the field of sustainability. Awareness plays a crucial role in building a sustainable future and has the power to transform society through informed and engaged individuals. Therefore, VSB-TUO actively works on integrating sustainability goals into all aspects of the educational process and creating an environment that fosters a sustainable approach to education.
Our goal is to provide inspiring study programmes and other forms of further education, such as summer schools, lifelong learning courses, and specialised courses, which help shape new generations of responsible citizens capable of addressing global issues related to sustainable development. This commitment extends beyond our University study offerings and includes additional lifelong learning opportunities. We are firmly committed to promoting open and free dialogue, upholding democratic values, raising awareness of sustainability, and actively engaging the public in this critical issue. We believe that only through collective effort can we achieve a sustainable future.
17.4.2. Education for SDGs: specific courses on sustainability
The ESDGs project (Sustainable Development Goals in Education and in Action!), in which the Faculty of Economics is involved, targets university students, helping them integrate sustainability into their studies and careers. It also offers online courses for the general public and resources for teachers, enabling wider incorporation of SDG principles in education and beyond.
Lifelong learning programmes and University of the Third Age (U3V): The U3V programme opens educational opportunities for those aged 55 and over, including local residents, providing access to various degree programs. This demonstrates a commitment to making higher education accessible to a broad age range.
Courses and activities for the general public: VSB-TUO offers lifelong learning courses, which extend educational opportunities beyond traditional degree-seeking students to include the general public, showcasing its inclusive approach.
Outreach events and science popularisation: Participation in public festivals like Colours of Ostrava and Researchers' Night, as well as organising community-specific events, Improve Your Tech Day, Art & Science festival, highlights VSB-TUO's engagement with the wider community and its commitment to promoting science and technology for all age groups.
Community-oriented facilities: Facilities like the Planetarium Ostrava, Geological Pavilion, and University Museum serve as educational centers open to the public, providing accessible science and technology learning experiences.
Alumni engagement and support for staff: With events like the Golden and Diamond Graduations, an Alumni Network, and cultural and recreational offerings for staff and their families, VSB-TUO fosters strong, lifelong relationships with its alumni and local community.
