Christian Teicht has been working as a research scientist at Fraunhofer ICT since 2017, initially preparing his PhD thesis in the thermochemical heat storage systems section. With a background in chemical engineering, his doctoral research focused on investigating heat and mass transfer processes in thermochemical systems. His expertise extends to latent heat storage systems and measurement methods for assessing the thermophysical properties of phase change materials (PCM). In addition to managing various research projects, he supervises PhD students, applies for strategic research initiatives, and fosters industrial partnerships.

Thermal Energy Storage Based on Thermochemical and Phase Change Materials

Presentation Abstract: Energy storage systems are crucial for the transition to renewable energy. This talk presents current research on heat storage and energy system modeling at Fraunhofer ICT. On the material level, it covers the investigation, characterization, and development of new thermochemical and latent heat storage materials (TCM and PCM). In TCM research, a specialized thermodynamic code is being developed to optimize material selection. In PCM research, work focuses on metastable supercoolable PCM for nearly lossless long-term heat storage, as well as new, low-cost PCM. One of the challenges for these materials is their cycling stability, which is being investigated using specialized calorimetric methods. At the component level, test benches are operated for evaluating TCM and PCM storage systems. Finally, at the system level, building models predict heating and cooling demand, while digital twins analyze and enhance the resilience of energy systems.
