Challenges in Battery Recycling and Second-Life Applications

Presentation Abstract: The growing demand for lithium-ion batteries, driven by the rise of electric vehicles and renewable energy storage, has intensified concerns about end-of-life battery management. Recycling and second-life applications offer sustainable solutions, yet several challenges remain. Recycling faces technical hurdles such as complex battery chemistries, inefficient separation processes, and high costs. Regulatory and economic barriers further complicate widespread adoption. Second-life applications, where used batteries are repurposed for less demanding energy storage, also present challenges related to degradation assessment, standardization, and safety. Addressing these issues requires advancements in recycling technologies, standardized battery designs, and supportive policies to create a circular battery economy.
