Ondřej Vitoslavský works as a software and hardware developer at UVB TECHNIK s.r.o., specializing in the production of Strip Measuring and Cleaning systems for cold rolling mills and production lines. He is currently working on the further development and implementation of measuring systems for press machines, such as Smart Cushion Pin, thickness measurement, and strip length control. He is also involved in the development of an intelligent straightener project focused on online evaluation of strip behavior and process forces to improve leveling effectiveness before forming operations.

From Coil to Press: Intelligent Inline Monitoring of Strip Behavior in Forming Processes

Presentation abstract: The quality of stamped parts is significantly influenced by the material condition before the strip enters the press. Variations from rolling, non-uniform plastic deformation across the thickness, and residual stress distributions stored in the coil affect forming stability, dimensional accuracy, and springback behavior. Effective leveling is essential for redistributing internal stresses and improving strip flatness, thereby increasing overall process robustness.

This presentation examines strip behavior during the transition from coil to press line. In press shop environments, the strip is fed from a decoiler through a leveling machine under controlled, typically low tensile stress. Coordinated control of the decoiler, loop system, and servo feeder ensures stable material flow and positioning. Nevertheless, forming performance remains sensitive to material properties, frictional conditions, and machine setup parameters.

The second part presents practical experience with press monitoring using the Smart Cushion Pin system, where localized force measurements provided insight into tool behavior and load variations in automotive production.
