Principles of Effective Reading and Writing

Description

The course covers the fundamentals of academic writing and stylistic methods for creating clear and engaging texts.
Students analyse professionally written articles to study sentence, paragraph, and overall organisation, style, and logical flow. They practise summarising and paraphrasing texts, and give and receive peer feedback to assess the effectiveness of the techniques taught.
Furthermore, the course incorporates working with AI tools; students learn about the ethical use of AI and explore how AI can enhance the reading and writing process. Throughout the course, students utilise AI in their assignments while concurrently analysing the AI-generated outputs (such as text organisation, summarization, paraphrasing, etc.).
The goals for the course are (1) to become more proficient in applying stylistic practices by evaluating and practising principles of academic writing; (2) learn how to give constructive feedback; (3) draft a motivation letter; and (4) learn the fundamentals of using AI in academic reading and writing.
