Writing for Publication I - Online for part-time PhD students

Description

The course is the first part of a full (2-semester) course that supports students in writing for publication in English.
The main outcome of this course is a manuscript students submit for publication in an academic journal by the end of the second semester.
Besides teaching about abstract and introduction/ literature review, this course introduces writing and publishing as a process, and teaches writing strategies to support effective writing.
In preparation for writing, students create a corpus of articles and analyse them for rhetorical moves. Through analysing the corpus, they also start looking for suitable journals.
Students learn about different citation practices and to work with sources. Also, they learn to outline, develop, and revise their texts, and give and receive peer feedback.

The goals for the course are (1) to develop and engage in an effective professional writing process that includes effective time management, goal setting, and regular writing time; (2) understand the nature and goals of professional publishing, including key aspects of new contributions, engaging in the field, and contributing to the discipline; (3) understand the value of peer review, co-authorship, and research teams as part of publication; (4) understand the genre of a research journal article; and (5) draft and revise several subsections of a research journal article (title, abstract, introduction/ literature review).
