Mental Health in Academia 1

Description

This course explores the full mental health spectrum within academic environments, moving from mental illness and "languishing" to well-being and "flourishing". Participants will improve their mental health literacy by applying a traffic light analogy to monitor personal shifts in sleep, mood, social engagement, and productivity.
The curriculum identifies the signs of common academic challenges, including burnout, depression, anxiety, and work addiction, emphasizing that these are often products of the environment rather than personal weakness. Essential training on crisis planning and suicide prevention is also included, providing practical tools for self-support and intervention for colleagues in distress.
Finally, the course introduces the science of flourishing through the PERMA model and the "atelic lens," encouraging a focus on the value of the process rather than just the output. Learners will gain actionable strategies to maintain long-term well-being while striving for academic excellence.
