Scientific Writing Camp is an intensive two-day event designed for PhD students, which has been part of the PhD Academy activities at VŠB-TUO since 2022. Its main objective is to provide participants with hands-on experience in developing a research proposal in an international and interdisciplinary environment.

What to expect

During the programme, PhD students from various disciplines and countries come together to share their research focus and establish new academic connections. The event begins with short presentations by participants, which serve as a basis for forming teams that reflect their research interests and preferences. Guided by experienced mentors, these teams then collaborate intensively over two days to develop a research project proposal.

An integral part of the programme is the continuous support of mentors—experienced academics and researchers from various fields. Throughout the event, they actively engage with the teams, consult their ideas, provide feedback, share their expertise, and help participants approach problems from different perspectives.

The final output is a joint presentation delivered by each team before an expert panel. Based on the evaluation, the best teams are awarded financial support in the form of scholarships, along with the opportunity to cover the open access publication fee (APC) for a research article, provided it originates from this collaboration and is published in a first- or second-quartile journal.

The programme also includes a participant vote for the “Most Popular Team.” The winning team in this category receives support in the form of a covered conference fee for an international conference.

Scientific Writing Camp thus fosters not only academic writing skills but also collaboration, critical thinking, and communication across disciplines and cultures.

Since its pilot edition, which was held in Czech and limited to a single university, the event has gradually evolved into an international programme conducted in English and, in recent years, has been opened to PhD students from the University of Ostrava and the Silesian University in Opava.
