FAQ

I am a student of an engineering faculty at VŠB-TUO. Can I choose English if I do not have any prior knowledge?

Studying a foreign language at university takes place at a pre-intermediate or intermediate rather than beginner level. We recommend students to continue in a language they studied at secondary school. Part of the curriculum is also a professional language.

Do I have to join the language group specified in the schedule?

Students should respect the group division set by the schedule. The schedule is designed so that the language groups had an equal number of students. Any changes made by the teacher must be respected.

I have good knowledge of a foreign language. May I take the exam earlier?

Students can pass the exam at any time during the study with the language teacher to whom they are assigned in the particular semester and who recommends taking the exam before the regular date. The student must take all the missing credit tests, and written and oral exam in one day. Until the exam, s/he is required to attend the classes.

I ran out of regular and remedial dates for my exam (credit test). Is there a possibility of another attempt?

After exhausting all the set dates, the student may ask the head of the Institute of Foreign Languages to allow another attempt. The student collects the application at the study office, fills it in, gives reasons and submits to the head of the Institute of Foreign Languages, deputy, registrar or the head of the language section.

I am repeating a year. Can I continue studying the language with former classmates?

For students who repeat a year, it is recommended to continue studying the language, if they have passed credit tests from the previous semesters and if their schedule permits it. Next year, study materials for the first year might change, which will cause problems. Interruption of language study is not recommended.

Does the Institute of Foreign Languages organize conversation courses?

In some semesters, the Institute of Foreign Languages opens a one-semester conversation course of English language with a native speaker. For information, contact the Institute of Foreign Languages at the beginning of the semester. The Institute of Foreign Languages also recommended watching the NEWS on the website of the university, which is offering courses for students.

Can I study another foreign language besides the obligatory language at the Institute of Foreign Languages?

For capacity reasons, the Institute of Foreign Languages cannot organize voluntary courses. In our computer lab, students can broaden their knowledge of language study or pursue the individual study of another foreign language. We also recommend watching the NEWS on the website of the university offering courses for students.
