The fifth FIP Academy seminar was about robots and lightweight composites
The fifth seminar, held at the beginning of June, concluded the series of presentations within the FIP Academy.

Stefan Grushko, a recent winner of the Werner von Siemens Prize for the best graduate thesis on Industry 4.0, and Aleš Vysocký from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the VSB-Technical University of Ostrava (VSB-TUO) presented their research on human-robot interaction and collaboration. The second lecture featured Jakub Kořenek from the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU.

At the beginning of the first presentation, the participants were introduced to the research activities carried out at the Department of Robotics. The following part of the presentation was devoted to the gesture-based guidance of the robot in its workspace and to improving operator’s awareness about the status of the robot companion using tactile notification devices.

"Mutual understanding and awareness between human and robot during their collaboration represent a substantial aspect of achieving good efficiency, safety and ergonomics in task execution. Systems enabling intuitive control and timely warnings can reduce the time it takes for inexperienced operators to get used to the production process as well as reduce discomfort while working near the robot," notes Stefan Grushko, who holds a PhD in robotics from VSB-TUO. His recent research and teaching interests include human-robot collaboration, teleoperation and upper-limb prosthetic devices.

Aleš Vysocký is a researcher and assistant professor at VSB-TUO. His research focuses on human-robot interaction and collaborative robotics. His latest work aims at intuitive interaction and control of robotic systems.

The combination of hydroforming and injection moulding technologies was the topic of the second presentation by Jakub Kořenek from the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU (Fraunhofer IWU) in Chemnitz, Germany. According to Jakub Kořenek, research into new techniques using these methods for processing thermoplastic fibre composites has resulted in many successes, including cost reduction and increased process efficiency, but for example, bond strength and process control require further investigation. "The researchers' efforts are being spurred by, among other things, the growing demand for these composites in areas such as the automotive industry. Hybrid parts play an important role in lightweight solutions," he said.

Jakub Kořenek studied bachelor’s double degree program in Mechanical Engineering at Brno University of Technology and Chemnitz University of Technology, where he subsequently completed his Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering with a specialisation in manufacturing systems and production processes. He is currently working as a research associate at the Fraunhofer IWU (Department Sheet Metal Forming).

The FIP Academy is one of the activities of the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform for Applied Artificial Intelligence for Materials & Manufacturing at VSB - Technical University of Ostrava. Its aim is to learn about the research carried out in the institutions that form the platform and to seek opportunities for future scientific cooperation. In the first year of the FIP Academy, a total of five online seminars were held with more than hundred participants, and ten speakers sharing their scientific knowledge. The next series of seminars will continue from the following academic year 2022/2023, starting in October.
