Siemens Czech Republic has presented the 2025 Werner von Siemens Awards to outstanding students, young researchers, and educators. The award for the Best Doctoral Thesis on Smart Infrastructure and Energy was granted to Vojtěch Blažek from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava for his dissertation Optimization in Smart Grids.

In his research, Vojtěch Blažek focuses on optimizing the operation of smart energy infrastructure (smart grids), with particular emphasis on integrating electromobility through Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology. In this concept, an electric vehicle is not perceived merely as a consumer of electricity but also as a “mobile battery.” Blažek developed a multi-criteria optimization approach that simultaneously considers electricity generation from renewable sources, battery storage systems, electric vehicles, and tariff schemes related to distribution grid connection. His doctoral thesis was carried out in collaboration with the CEET research center at VSB – TUO.

“Electromobility and renewable energy sources are changing the way we design and operate energy systems. With the decentralization of generation and the rapid growth of electric vehicles, it is becoming increasingly challenging to keep peaks, costs, and grid stability within acceptable limits. V2G is still an underutilized piece of the puzzle that can significantly support the grid. I was fascinated by the possibility of linking theoretical research with real-world applications and demonstrating that V2G is not just a concept but a practical tool for everyday energy management,” says Vojtěch Blažek.
“What interests me most is the idea of an electric vehicle as a mobile battery that can become an active component of the energy infrastructure. In my work, I show that properly managed electric vehicles can significantly contribute to grid stability, consumption optimization, and more efficient use of renewable energy sources,” he adds.

The Werner von Siemens Award has been organized for 28 years by Siemens Czech Republic in partnership with leading representatives of universities and the Czech Academy of Sciences, who also guarantee the individual categories and participate in evaluating the submitted works. This year, 56 experts and representatives of the academic community served on the independent juries. In terms of scope, financial rewards, and tradition, the Werner von Siemens Award is one of the most significant independent initiatives of its kind in the Czech Republic.
