SPACE @VSB-TUO – Technologies for Space, Research for Earth

Space technologies are an integral part of research, development and education at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava. We connect experts from across the university and develop technical competencies applicable to space applications, ranging from advanced materials, sensors and electronics to robotics, artificial intelligence, data processing and technologies supporting space missions.

We participate in research projects, collaborate with industry partners, and transfer acquired knowledge into education and science outreach. A prominent example is the preparation of experiments for the International Space Station (ISS), complemented by a broader portfolio of technologies and areas of expertise that have been developer over the long term.

This website brings together our space-related projects, research teams, technologies, study opportunities and science outreach activities in one place.

Key Areas and Activities

CONREX – Nanorobots for Microgravity

CONREX i sone of the university´s most prominent space projects. The project investigates the behaviour of magnetic nano- and microrobots in microgravity and their potential applications, including the suppression of bacterial biofilms. Developed at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (FEECS) in collaboration with the Czech space industry, the experiment is being prepared for a mission to the International Space Station (ISS). In August 2026, the project succesfully passed a major milestone, the Preliminary Design Review (PDR), attended by a representative of the European Space Agency (ESA), and the team presented a new engineering model of the device.

ISS T-Shirt – Astronaut Monitoring

A second project being prepared for deployment on the ISS focuses on monitoring astronauts´physiological parameters and stress levels. Th smart T-shirt, equipped with integrated sensors, is designed to collect data during space missions and enable its subsequent analysis. The project is a collaboration between VSB – Technical University of Ostrava, Masaryk University and the companies EGMEDICAL and G. L. Electronic. The prototype was also teste dat VSB-TUO by Czech military pilot Aleš Svoboda.

CAERPIN Consortium and Inter-University Collaboration

VSB – Technical Univerity of Ostrava is a member of the CAERPIN (Czech Aerospace Research Intitute) consorcium. The University has also hosted SPACE DAY, an event focused on fostering collaboration and preparing joint space reseach initiatives. Within the framework of CAERPIN, VSB-TUO has identified a broad portfolio of space-related competencies, including micro- and nanorobotisc, wereable sensors, astronaut monitoring, processing of data from space missions, machine learning applied to astrophysical data, vibration suppression, energy harvesting, fibre-optic sensors, control and robotic systems, space environment modelling, as well as the regulation and legislation of space missions.

Space technologies at VSB-TUO

Space technologies at VSB-TUO encompass several interconnected areas built on the university´s expertise in Engineering, materials science, information technologies, and geoinformatics. These activities range from the development of satellite technologies and the processing of space data to Earth observation and solutions designed for operation in extreme environments.

  • Satellite and Space Technologies: technologies related to satellites, their design, onboard systems, and the operation of space missions.
  • Satellite and Space Technologies: technologies related to satellites, their design, onboard systems, and the operation of space missions.
  • Data, Artificial Intelligence and Computing Technologies: processing and analysis of large-scale datasets, as well as the use of AI and high-performance computing for space and astrophysical applications.
  • Earth Observation and Geoinformatics: the use of satellite and other geospatial data, remote sensing technologies, and geoinformation systems.
  • Materials and Technologies for Extreme Environments: the development of materials, sensors, structural solutions, control systems, and robotic technologies suitable for demanding environments, including space.

Study Programmes with a Space Connection

Space research and development require experts from a wide range of disciplines. At VSB – Technical University of Ostrava, you can study programmes whose knowledge and technologies are widely applicable in the space industry and research sector. These include materials science, electronics, computer science and artificial intelligence, robotics, energy engineering, mechanical engineering, geoinformatics, Earth observation, and data science.

A career in space technology does not necessarily begin a degree programme called „space“. It can start with a technical specialisation that provides the essential knowledge and skills needed to develop and operate space missions.

Popularisation

Ostrava Planetarium

The Ostrava Planetarium is part of the Faculty of Mining and Geology (FMG) at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava and serves as a key hub for space-related education and public outreach. It features a digital dome theatre, more than 40 interactive exhibits, a stellar observatory, a solar observatory, and advanced astronomical equipment available for public observation.

The Planetarium provides a natural gateway to the world of space science and technology for schools, families, and the general public. Together with the Prof. Pošepný Geological Pavilion, it forms one of the university’s two science-learning centres, helping to connect research, education, and public engagement.

Outreach, Students and the Public

The broader space ecosystem at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava includes activities such as SPACE DAY, visits and lectures by Czech astronaut reserve candidate Aleš Svoboda, the FEECS Journal Club focused on NewSpace and CubeSat technologies, educational programmes offered by the Ostrava Planetarium, and a range of other initiatives for students and the general public.

These activities help connect cutting-edge research with student recruitment, talent development, and public engagement, fostering greater interest in space science and technology across all age groups.
