Summary
The Masonry Structures course introduces the Eurocode 6 which is the European standard for design of masonry structures. Students learn how to design and assess the masonry subjected to compression, shear and bending, using both general and simplified calculation methods. They also learn about vertical and horizontal structures and reinforced masonry. The course also covers execution of masonry according to EC6, detailing or serviceability limit state. Failures and repairs of masonry are also included in this course.
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit
Graduates gain skills and knowledge in following areas:
- design and assessment of masonry structures according to European standards (Eurocode 6),
- failures and repairs of masonry structures.
Course Contents
Lectures:

1. Masonry history. Properties of units, mortar and masonry. Types of masonry units.
2. Static analysis of masonry structures. Static scheme of single- and multi-storey buildings. Bracing and stability of buildings. Structural systems of buildings.
3. Numerical models of masonry structures. Methods for modelling, homogenization of masonry.
4. Ultimate limit state (compression). Effective height of the wall.
5. Ultimate limit state (concentrated load; shear).
6. Ultimate limit state (walls subjected to lateral loading); approximate methods for calculation.
7. Simplified calculation methods for unreinforced masonry structures.
8. Serviceability limit states of masonry structures. Execution of masonry.
9. Detailing of masonry structures. Bracing members and ring beams. Lengths between expansion joints.
