Summary
The subject is focused on diagnosis of building materials and structures. The course provides an overview of the processes of degradation of building materials and methods for their identification. The theoretical findings are complemented by examples of practical applications. Students will gain skills in building testing in the design and implementation trvanlivostních tests. The course is designed for students of building materials, conservation, building survey and remediation design, architecture.
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit
The objective of of the course is to familiarize students with basic knowledge in the degradation of building materials and structures. Students will gain knowledge of the problems of degradation and durability of building stone, different types of aggregates, concrete, binders, ceramics, wood and glass.
Course Contents
Basic topics: Terminology - Degradation, corrosion, durability of building materials. Causes of degradation of building materials. Types of physical, chemical and biological degradation. Environmental influences. Influence of air. Temperature influence. Influence of humidity. Steel corrosion. Degradation of silicate materials (concrete, glass, ceramics), degradation of wood and polymers. Possibilities of protection of building materials against corrosion and degradation. Possibilities of remediation of degraded materials and structures. Forecasting the durability of building materials. Durability testing. Accelerated durability testing.
