Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit |

To describe and clarify principles of detectors and their applications. |
Course Contents |
---|
- Overview of ionizing radiation (charged and neutral particles).
- Interaction of ionizing radiation with matter.
- Gas detectors (ionization chambers, proportional counters, Geiger-Muller counters, corona-type and spark chambers. Measurement.
- Scintillation detectors (solid and liquid scintillators). Measurement.
- Semiconductor detectors (Ge, Si). Measurement.
- Determination of charged particle trajectory (nuclear emulsions, bubble and cloud chambers).
- Determination of linear momentum and velocity (magnetic field, Cherenkov counters, drift chambers).
- Detection of alpha and beta particles. Gamma ray detection. Neutron detection. Detection of selected isotopes (tritium, Rn, U). Radon measurement.
- Dosimeters. Measurement of basic dosimetric quantities.
- Detectors of cosmic rays.
- Detection systems in high-energy physics. |
