- To acquaint students with basic by methods used for monitoring organic and inorganic substances in the environment.
- To acquaint students with the basic types of toxic substances and their chemical, physical and toxicological properties.
- Provide students with a comprehensive view of the environmental monitoring system.
- To acquaint students with basic legislation in the environmental protection.

Course Contents |
---|
1. Characteristics of analytical methods, the choice of methods, internal (control charts) and external (inter-laboratory comparisons) quality control in the laboratory, reference materials, accreditation, authorization. Monitoring organizations in the Czech Republic.
2. Sampling of air, water and soil. The method of collection, preservation and storage.
3. Preparation of the sample, extraction of samples, analyzes and extracts of solid samples .
4. Gas and liquid chromatography: separation principles, instrumentation, sample injection , the choice of columns and detectors. Sample pretratment prior to analysis.
5. Spectral analysis: atomic absorption and emission spectroscopy, UV-VIS absorption and infrared spectrometry. Principles and instrumentation, sample tratment prior to analysis.
6. Electrochemical methods of analysis: potencipmetrie, conductometry voltammetry. Principles and instrumentation. Sample tratment prior to analysis.
7. Determination mnonoaromatických and polyaromatic hydrocarbons using liquid and gas chromatography. Determination of light hydrocarbons, dioxins and furans by gas chromatography. Occupational exposure limits thereof.
8. Determination of parameters group of organic substances in water : extractable and non-polar extractable substances, volatile organic compounds, absorbable and extractable organic compounds, surfactants, COD, BOD5. Occupational exposure limits thereof.
9. Determination of polychlorinated biphenyls and phenols by gas and liquid chromatography. Determination of phenols other methods. Occupational exposure limits thereof.
10. Determination of pesticides, dioxins and furans by gas and liquid chromatography. Occupational exposure limits thereof.
11. Determination of sulfur, carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen sulphide and ammonia by UV-VIS and IR spectrometry, chromatography, and titration methods. Occupational exposure limits thereof.
12. Determination of ozone, fluorine compounds, phenols, formaldehyde using UV-VIS and IR spectroscopy and chromatography. Occupational exposure limits thereof.
13. Determination of heavy metals by atomic absorption, atomic emission (ICP- OES), UV-VIS spectroscopy, polarography and voltammetry. Speciation analysis. Occupational exposure limits thereof.
14. Determination of inorganic anions using UV-VIS spectroscopy, ion chromatography, capillary electrophoresis and isotachophoresis, ion selective electrodes and classical methods (gravimetry and volumetric analysis). Occupational exposure limits thereof.
