Theoretical foundations of fuel technology. Current processes and their innovations, utilization of the most important types of fuels in the energy, chemical, metallurgical and other industries. New technologies and utilization of fuels. Environmental aspects of fuel technology. |
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit |

Goals of subject:
– Introduce students to occurence, extraction and processing of fuels.
– Explain to the listeners the interdependence of fuel technology with other industries.
– Introduce students to basic methods of determining fuel quality parameters.
Gained knowledge:
- classification of fuels, their origins and global supplies
– extraction of fuels, their processing, transport and trading
– use of fuels
Gained experience:
– sampling of liquid, solid and gaseous fuels
– analysis of liquid, solid and gaseous fuels
– evaluation of fuel quality and utilization

Course Contents |
---|
1. Basic concepts. World energy sources and their perspectives. Fuel distribution. Caustobiolite formation.
2. Coal, it's properties and types. Analysis of solid fuels.
3. Treatment of coal and ways of its further processing. Coking, description of the coking process, coke products and their properties.
4. Use of coke products, tar processing, coal tar pitch, carbonaceous materials.
5. Combustion. Principles, processes, devices.
6. Gasification. Principles, processes, devices. Methods of using gasification products. Underground gasification.
7. Methods of gas cleaning. Filtration, absorption, adsorption, chemical conversion. Removal of dust particles, tar compounds, sulfur compounds, nitrogen compounds.
8. Natural gas. Estimates of world inventories. Extraction, processing, distribution, storage, utilization. Slate extraction, its aspects and feasibility.
9. Biogas, dry and wet digestion, biogas stations, landfill gas.
10. Hydrogen, ways of production, utilization, perspectives. Fuel cells.
11. Petroleum, composition, properties, classification. Analysis of liquid fuels and oils.
12. Petroleum extraction, basic processing, transport and storage. Biological degradation of petroleum and petroleum derivatives.
13. Ways of processing petroleum. Petrochemistry. Fission processes. Refining of petroleum fractions.
14. Liquid biofuels. Alcohol biofuels, fuels with vegetable fats basis.
