Summary |

Fundamental overview of non-ferrous metals, their properties, technical classification, sources of raw materials.Fundamentals of pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy and electrometallurgy. Fundamentals of processing and refining of heavy, light, noble, refractory, radioactive and rare earth metals. Alloys of nonferrous metals - basic properties and applications. |
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit |

Student will be able to (competences):
- define basic characteristics of nonferrous metals
- classify and explain important processing technologies
- define and clarify fundamental process parameters affecting metal processing
- formulate advantages and disadvantages of individual technologies
- apply basic theoretical knowledge from physical chemistry, chemistry and theory of metallurgical processes to the processes for production of nonferrous metals
- characterize basic presumptions of the flow of pyro- , hydro- and electrometallurgy processes
Student will be able to (facilities):
- apply findings at solution of technical problems
- optimize process parameters of preparing selected metals
- evaluate optimum technological process for production of selected groups of metals |
Course Contents |

Technical classification of nonferrous metals, their typical properties, applications of pure metals and their alloys in modern industry.
Raw materials for metallurgy, primary and secondary raw materials. Procedures for the treatment of primary raw materials.
Thermodynamics and kinetics of pyrometallurgy processes of nonferrous metals, thermal dissociation, roasting, reduction, chlorination, Kellog´s and Ellingham´s diagrams.
Pyrometallurgical processes of non-ferrous metal production. Melting processes, products: slags, matte, speiss, crude metal.
Hydrometallurgy and electrometallurgy processes of non-ferrous metal production.
Refining processes.
Production, properties and application of heavy metals (Cu, Ni, Pb, Co and Sn).
Production, properties and application of light metals (Al and Mg).
Production, properties and application of noble metals (Au, Ag, and Pt group metals).
Production, properties and application of high temperature melting metals (Ti, W, Mo).
Production, properties and application of rare metals and lanthanoides (Sc, La and lanthanoides).
Production, properties and application of radioactive metals (U).
Utilization of secondary raw materials for the production of non-ferrous metals and alloys, economic and ecological benefits.
