Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Qualification Requirements:
Finished higher education in Bachelor's degree programme.
The Czech educational system is regulated by the Higher Education Act (Act 111/1998). Studies at VSB-TUO are regulated by the Statute of VSB – Technical University of Ostrava.
Profile of the Programme
The objectives of the study are based on the below mentioned profile of the graduate of the study program. The primary objective of the study is to endue students with a complex of knowledge and skills as well as general competencies to be able to master a complex field of materials engineering at the required level. Specialization 1: Advanced engineering materials The aim of the study in the specialization Advanced engineering materials is to endue students with such professional knowledge and skills, which will enable them to perform complex material analyses, especially analyses of their production technologies, internal structure, utility properties; furthermore to carry out advanced design of engineering materials for the given conditions of use; to design appropriate kinds of tests to evaluate properties of materials and methods to evaluate structural characteristics of materials; to perform a qualitative assessment of the tests and to be able to carry out some kinds of evaluation themselves; to carry out demanding expertise in the field of material engineering. Specialization 2: Materials technologies and recycling The graduates of specialization in Materials technology and recycling should be able to optimize the complex processes of preparation and properties of advanced materials based on non-ferrous metals, applied in the hi-tech industrial production. The specialization is designed as interdisciplinary focusing on both the innovative production technologies of special materials and their applications in various industrial sectors – energy, transport and aerospace industry, medicine, electrical engineering and electronics, and others. The emphasis will be put on the fabrication processes of products with the improved functionality and lifetime, where the internal structure of materials, their properties, used process technologies and the post-processing, and performance/reliability under operating conditions play a major role. Another perspective area of the study will include the modern processes of material recycling that will become ever more important in the near future.
Key Learning Outcomes
Key Lerning Outcomes are Expressed in following Structure: Knowledge, Skills, General competencies
The graduates of the study program: Demonstrate knowledge of basic theoretical courses – e.g Phase transformations, Physical metallurgy, Powder metallurgy, Advanced engineering materials, Numerical simulations and modelling in materials engineering at a level making possible their application in other courses and also in engineering practice. Specialization 1: Advanced engineering materials • Master detailed characteristics of advanced engineering materials including materials for special purposes; they understand in particular detailed relations between their internal structure and properties in use; they also understand advanced concepts of increasing materials properties through changes in production technologies and material structure changes. • Are able to characterize both basic and advanced methods of materials properties testing, as well as sophisticated methods of structure phase analysis of materials. They are capable to choose appropriate testing methods to evaluate the properties and structure for different types of materials and different conditions of use. • They master advanced concepts of materials degradation processes and characteristics that determine resistance of materials to these degradation processes. • They are aware of the limits of defined concepts, approaches, conditions of their use, or their limitations in practice. Specialization 2: Materials technologies and recycling • Will have knowledge in natural science and applied basis, which will enable the creative solutions of problems; • Will have an overview of both conventional and innovative procedures for the preparation of different types of materials, their further processing and applications; • Will be able to propose the suitable processes for the preparation and processing of various types of materials; • Will be knowledgeable in waste treatment technologies while respecting environmental protection; • Will have an overview of the possibilities and limitations of recycling technologies and waste management issues under EU and CZ legislation.
Graduates of the study program are able independently and creatively: • To analyze relevant information and on its basis to evaluate existing technological processes in production and processing of materials, or to propose new technological procedures, etc. • To address technical and economic aspects of the management of industrial enterprises, smaller companies, etc. Specialization 1: Advanced engineering materials • To perform a comprehensive analysis of materials, their production technologies, utility properties, etc.; to analyze and evaluate existing technical solutions in the field of materials and also propose new solutions. • To perform advanced design (selection) of engineering materials for given conditions of use (mechanical loading, external environment, etc.). • To propose appropriate kinds of tests to evaluate properties of materials and methods for evaluation of structure characteristics, to interpret testing results competently and to carry out some kinds of tests by themselves. • To perform demanding expertise in the field of materials engineering. • To use obtained knowledge for the theoretical and experimental research of materials, especially for research and development of new materials with increased utility properties and their introduction into production. Specialization 2: Materials technologies and recycling • To search, organize and interpret information on both conventional and innovative processes for the preparation of various types of metallic materials, recycling of waste materials and, if necessary, to apply some basic research methods for solving technological problems; • To use the professional skills in solving practical problems in enterprises and companies involved in the production and processing of materials and recycling of secondary raw materials; • To technologically and organizationally manage the control of technological processes of production and recycling of materials.
General competencies:
The graduates dispose of general competencies in the extent that is defined by the National qualifications framework for tertiary education with emphasis to communication, governing and organization skills. They are able to communicate at least in one foreign language.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples
Graduates will find a wide range of jobs in engineering, metallurgical, automotive industry, in companies oriented to the production and/or processing of polymer materials, ceramics, etc. as highly qualified experts for solving a wide range of material problems, e.g. as technologists, material specialists, managers, etc. Graduates can also find employment in institutions dealing with research and development in the field of materials.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Examination regulations, assesment and grading are described in the Study and Examination Rules.
