Summary
After completing the course, the student will know the basic structural elements of aircraft piston engines, their systems and the principle of operation.
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basic structural elements of piston engines and their operation.
Course Contents
1. History and development of aircraft piston engines.
2. Division of aircraft piston engines.
3. Description of piston engine design, operation of four-stroke petrol engine, PV diagram.
4. Valve lines.
5. Two-stroke petrol engine.
6. Diesel engine, description of construction, engine operation.
7. Lubrication system of a four-stroke piston engine.
8. Engine fuel system, carburetor, fuel injection.
9. Cooling systems of piston engines.
10. Ignition systems, starters, power supplies. aircraft energy.
11. Gearboxes, Auxiliary drive box.
12. Installation of engines for aircraft airframe, fire protection systems.
13. Height, fuel correction, engine supercharging, effect on performance.
14. Engine life, operating cycles, maintenance systems.
